Step-by-step guide to inputting system parameters and interpreting fan curve intersections for optimal selection.

The Aerotech Fan Selection Calculator is a web-based tool that helps engineers identify the optimal fan model for their application by plotting the system curve against available fan performance curves.

Step 1: Enter the design airflow in CFM or m³/hr. This is the volume of air the system must move at design conditions, corrected for air density at the operating temperature and altitude.

Step 2: Calculate the total system resistance. Sum all pressure losses in the system — duct friction, fittings, filters, coils, and process equipment. Add a 10–15% safety factor for system effect and future fouling.

Step 3: Select the fan type based on specific speed. The calculator automatically computes specific speed from your inputs and highlights the appropriate fan category.

Step 4: Review the operating point on the fan curve. The intersection of the system curve and fan curve should fall within 10% of the fan's best efficiency point for optimal energy performance.

Step 5: Check the motor power at the operating point and add a 15–20% service factor for motor sizing. The calculator outputs a recommended motor frame size and VFD rating.
